Starting from September 2023 fluorescent light tubes must be replaced with LED lighting solutions

The European Commission has adopted a regulation prohibiting the sale of fluorescent tubes in the European Union starting from September 2023. This regulation bans the sale of mercury-containing light sources due to advancements in technology and the introduction of various environmentally friendly solutions in the lighting sector. The most common fluorescent lights, such as T5 linear fluorescent tubes and T8 linear fluorescent tubes are prohibited from use as of August 24, 2023.

Who does the new regulation affect?
The regulation applies to all businesses, public institutions, kindergarten and school buildings, gymnasiums, toilets, etc. As a result all businesses, households and other institutions must replace existing fluorescent tubes with energy-efficient and environmentally safe LED tubes and other LED lighting solutions.

How to determine whether a fluorescent tube or an LED tube is in use?
Fluorescent tubes are generally characterized by a longer time to reach full brightness and flickering when the light is ignited. As the lifespan of a fluorescent tube nears its end, the light will start flickering and then stop working altogether. From a distance, it is very difficult to distinguish whether it is a fluorescent tube or an LED tube. To be sure, it is advisable to contact your building manager, electrician, or other specialist to determine which type of tubes are used in your facility.

What should I do?
LED House recommends that all businesses and institutions review the lighting fixtures in their premises and not leave the replacement of fluorescent tubes with LED lighting solutions on the last moment, as the new regulation prohibits the use of fluorescent tubes from September of this year.
